Review BSA Report for Possible Structures

These steps explain how to review BSA activity for possible structures.

  1. Launch Tool #633 Print BSA/SAR Activity Report.

  2. On the Bank Secrecy Act Report Selection screen, enter the dates you'd like to review.

    • To run the report for all members, simply enter dates for review.

    • If you decide to review transactions over two months (i.e. May 15 to June 15), make sure the Month/year to process date is the same as the last month. The example above would require that you enter June 20XX (06XX) in the first date range field.

  3. Leave the SSN/TIN field blank if you'd like to pull BSA activity on everyone.

    • Enter a value in this field if you'd like to review activity for one individual.

  4. Click the forward arrow to print the report.

  5. Review the report for transactions that, when combined, would require you to file a CTR.

    • For example, a member deposits $4,000 every day over the course of 4 days. He has just deposited $16,000, but no CTR was filed because he structured the transactions. This member has avoided the CTR, but now that you know what he’s doing, an SAR will be filed instead.

AuditLink Recommendations

  • Review this report twice a month, each time including the previous four weeks of activity. AuditLink recommends reviewing transactions on the first and the 16th of each month.

  • Look for transactions that, when combined, would require you to file a CTR. For example, a member deposits $4,000 every day over the course of four days. He has just deposited $16,000, but no CTR was filed because he structured the transactions. The member has avoided the CTR, but now that we know what he's doing, he'll be getting an SAR filed instead.
