Introduction to Where Your Members Shop

(See below for directions on using this screen.)

By definition, financial institutions are the middlemen of all middlemen. Settlement is about connecting our members with the retailers who are key to their daily lives. It’s not so much that someone wants a debit card, it’s that they need a convenient way to pay for groceries. And that’s where we come in. To do a better job in serving our members and being an advocate in our communities, we must understand who is important in our members’ daily lives.

With a little work, we can understand which vendors might consider our membership key to their business plans. What if you had a large number of members doing business with a vendor right around the corner? How would you like an email list or a phone log for all of your members who regularly shop at the grocery store next door or the home center down the street? Better yet, can you make a case for a new branch by understanding that your members constantly frequent a shopping location near some available space?

The Where Your Members Shop tool analyzes transaction descriptions and sorts activity by retailer name, letting you analyze where your members spend their money and even allowing you to market to these members via Member Connect.

Data on this screen is pulled from transaction descriptions, so the analysis will depend on what data was included in the transaction record from the merchant. Currently, transaction data for this screen is available for ACH debits, ATM, debit card, and online credit card purchases, using the previous month’s transaction files (ETRmmyy1, ETRmmyy2, and ETRmmyy3). Explain in more detail how data is gathered for display on the "Where Your Members Shop" dashboard (Tool #979).

The real power of this dashboard is that you can trend the data to view membership and account details on members using a single merchant. Select a merchant and use Open-Closed Dashboard.

Overview

Find out where your members are shopping. This can be a great set of tools for marketing to members who have a loan elsewhere and/or paying someone else, but can also be helpful to find where your members are spending their money. Is there a local merchant that you could partner with to drive home the community spirit of the credit union industry?

  • When first entering the screen, no selections are made. You must select the data (credit, debit, ATM, ACH) that you wish to view and press Enter to view results.

  • NOTE: Because this dashboard uses End-of-Month data, activity during the current month will not be included

  • Data for this screen is available after Beginning-of-Day Processing on the second day of the month, unless that day is a Sunday.  In that case data will be available on the next day.

  • NOTE: Individuals with an Employee Type code not equal to 0 (i.e. staff, board members, etc.) will be excluded from these results

Getting the Data

  • When first entering the screen, no selections are made. You must select the data (credit, debit, ATM, ACH) that you wish to view and press Enter to view results.

  • Use the Data selection field at the top of the screen to choose which type of data you’d like to see. You may choose any or all:

Credit card

To show credit card transactions. Applies only to CU*BASE online credit card activity (origin code 22).

Debit Card

To show debit card transactions (origin code 16).

ATM

To show ATM transactions (origin code 13).

ACH

To show ACH transactions (origin code 11).

Filtering and Sorting

  • Use the "Jump to name starting with" to move down the listing to the merchant name matching what you enter in the field.

  • Use a combination of the "Name containing" and "but not" to create a list of just the merchants you want to view. The "Name containing" fields will narrow the listing to only merchants including this text in the merchant name.  TIP:  Use the three fields to enter different ways the same merchant is presented, such as Wal-mart and Walmart.  The "but not" will exclude merchants with this wording as part of the merchant name from the listing, for example, excluding "GREENS" will exclude Walgreens entries from the listing.

  • To sort the data by column, click on the column header.  NOTE:  The Totals are a summary of the individual records.  For example, the Members column does not indicate the number of unique member, but instead the combined number of members for each merchant.

  • To compare only two or several merchants, change the N/A in the first column (in front of merchants) you wish to compare to Sel and use Enter.  Only these merchants will remain in the listing.  This also allows you to view the average transaction amount for these vendors.

  • To remove merchant(s) from the listing, change the N/A in the first column (in front of merchants) you wish to exclude) to Excl and use Enter. Select Show Exclusions (F15) to then view those exclusions and reinstate them as needed.

  • Filter the list to under 100 merchants and you get special buttons to work with the data of just these merchants!  See "Buttons available for under 100 merchants" below.  Included is the ability to see the members using these merchants.

Columns
